Basic Questions
Are you accepting new clients?
Yes, we typically have one or two slots open for new clients. About 90% of our clients prefer in-person therapy, and most sessions are in the afternoons and evenings. We occasionally have Saturday times available.
Do you see children or adolescents?
Unfortunately, we do not see children or adolescents. We only provide individual and relationship therapy for adults.
Do you see non-LGBTQIA+ clients too?
Yes! About 3/4th of our clients identify as LGBTQIA+, but we also have clients who simply wanted a non-religious and trauma-informed environment.
What is your cancellation policy?
Reserved Session Time
Your session time is reserved specifically for you each week. Because I hold that time for you and cannot offer it to someone else, you session fee is charged for all reserved sessions — whether you attend or not.
One-Time Courtesy Cancellation
I understand that unexpected things happen. As a one-time courtesy, each client is offered one late cancellation or missed session at no charge during our work together. After that, the regular session fee applies to all reserved sessions regardless of attendance.
Rescheduling Within the Same Week
If you know you can’t make your regular session, I will do my best to offer an alternate time within the same week. If we’re able to meet at another time that week, no additional fee applies.
If no alternate time is available or you choose not to accept one, the fee for the reserved session still applies since the time was held for you.
Planned Absences
If you know you’ll be away (for example, on vacation or work travel), please let me know as soon as possible. You’re still responsible for payment during that time if you wish to keep your regular session spot.
If you prefer not to pay for sessions you miss, you can release your reserved time and schedule appointments as availability allows. However, I can’t guarantee that a weekly spot will be available later.
Illness
If you’re sick or have any symptoms of illness, please do not attend in person. You’re welcome to switch your session to a virtual appointment instead. If you choose not to meet virtually, the regular session fee still applies since the time is reserved for you.
Extended Breaks
If you expect to be away for more than two consecutive weeks, we’ll discuss whether it makes sense to pause therapy or switch to a flexible scheduling plan until your schedule stabilizes.
Flexible Scheduling Option
Some clients prefer not to reserve a weekly session time. With flexible scheduling, you book sessions individually based on my current availability. Because this option does not hold a regular weekly slot, your preferred day and time may not always be available, and there may be wait times between sessions.
Will you testify on my behalf?
No. I will not testify on your behalf as a “fact” or “expert” witness. I do not take clients with pending legal action (except divorces in which I do not need to testify).
How do I get started?
I like to have a brief 15-minute phone call with each potential client to ensure that we’re a good fit. I’ll usually ask what brings you to therapy. You’ll probably have some questions for me, and I’ll probably have some for you. If it seems like it’s going to be a good fit (it usually is), then we check to see if I have availability that fits your schedule.

Therapy Questions

Do you see people in polyamorous and non-monogamous relationships?
Yes! There are sorts of relationship structures and we are comfortable seeing clients in monogomous traditional relationships and those in ethical non-monogamous, polyamorous, open, and other relationships.
What about Asexuals (I'm tired of being told I'm broken)?
We’ll be happy to help you figure out of you are asexual, where you fall on the spectrum, and with any problems this causes in your life (some aces are in mixed-orientation relationships, etc.).
We are also an Ace-friendly environment where you can work through your other struggles in an understanding and affirming environment.
What about Religion and Spirituality?
We provide a secular therapy space, and you are welcome to talk about your religious trauma (or the ways in which religion/spirituality enhances your life).
It’s my job to counsel you from your values – not mine. I’m keenly aware of the pain that moral judgment and religious undertones can cause, and I strive to provide a place where you can be free from both.
We see clients of all religions as well as atheists and agnostics. All are welcome here.
Do you provide individual or couple's therapy?
Both! We see both individuals and couples (and more). Approximately half of our clients are individuals, and the other half are couples or partners seeking help with relationship challenges. This gives us a unique perspective into the needs of both individuals and couples/partners – after all, many individuals are in therapy partly because of romantic, platonic, and family-of-origin challenges.
However, if we are seeing you as a couple/partner, we will not also provide individual therapy to one or both of you. It’s best to see separate therapists for individual and relationship therapy. I might, however, see you individually as part of relationship therapy.
Can we do both individual and couples therapy with you?
The short answer is no. If I’m your couples therapist, your relationship is my “client”. I might meet with each of you individually as part of our work together, but I will not provide individual therapy to an active couple who is in couples therapy.
If you go your separate ways, I will sometimes continue to work with one indivudally with the understanding that if you get back together we cannot resume couple’s therapy.
